Haha,I can't believe I did a whole synopsis/review of Slumdog Millionaire.Madness.
Ok,I was planning to post after I did my review, but I was way too tired, not to mention it was like 2 in the morning when I finally posted my review.Don't think of it as an official review, but more of me talking about how I feel about the movie.I thought it was great, and Freida Pinto,purrrrrrrrrrr.Lol.So don't take the review to heart, and GO WATCH THE MOVIE.
Ok,so what's going on in my life?Hmm,same old pattern.Monday do nothing,Tuesday/Wednesday gym,Thursday/Friday,do nothing/go out,Saturday gym,Sunday out with parents.Usually I'm at home using the com.I seem to be going the same 3 places all the time.YCK gym,Orchard,City Hall.I'm kinda bored, but at the same time I know there are few other places where I can go out and enjoy myself.Haix,Singapore is so 2-D.We're the most boring country on Earth.
Ok,so let me talk about gym so this post isn't so short.Hmm...lol.If you don't already know,I've been hitting the YCK gym since September or October.Used to go once a week, but lately I've been going twice a week. One session for cardio, another for weight training.I can't really see any visible results yet,but I'll keep working on it.Ok,apart from the flab,I have seen some results on my biceps, pecs and my abs.But since my pecs and abs are my core muscles,so it's mostly covered by flab, lol. It's kinda sad though, because I have impeccable abs,but it's tough to lose so much flab in such a short time without having to resort to some crash diet.Oh well,I'll go at my own pace.
We celebrated Kai's birthday on tuesday at Seoul Garden and then we went to play pool.I made a startling discovery,I SUCK AT POOL!I scratched almost every shot.It was incredibly humiliating.Lmao.Oh my god,I'll start playing pool more often to improve myself.I practically gave up after a couple of shots. It was a sad sight to see.
Well, seeing as I have like 2 months free,I'm trying to go learn something.I'm setting my sights on learning Krav Maga,an Israeli martial art.I find it fascinating, not to mention very kick ass, literally.I also want to learn a new language, either French,Spanish or Italian, but I don't want to pack my schedule like those kiasu kids who "want to get ahead in life".Pffft.
Well,I didn't get into SP as I wished.I got into RP,so my best hope is to ace the semester and then appeal out next semester.Oh well.I want to join tennis and soccer,so I have a better chance of moving to another school because of my CCA.Tbh,at this point I can't be arsed anymore.
Peace.
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
2 words.Absolutely terrific.I can see why it won an Oscar for best picture and best director.I was absolutely captivated by the movie, and the last scene with that "traditional" Bollywood sing and dance session, was absolutely hilarious.I had to stop myself from laughing out loud because I didn't want to disturb the crowd.I can't believe a whole bunch of idiots, not one or two,a WHOLE BUNCH of them walked out of the cinema at the start of that scene because they thought it was the end of the movie!I think it's a must watch movie for anyone who appreciates good films, not like that Pink Panther 2 crap people watch and like for some reason. As funny as you find Steve Martin(and I do not find him funny at all),you have to realise this movie is strictly a 100 minute punchline dumbed down to its mere comedic foundations(physical humor) because to do otherwise would be to compliment the intellect of its audience. If you want to watch a movie, watch a good movie, like Slumdog or Benjamin Button.I'm going to watch Frost/Nixon,and I've watched The Wrestler online since it's R21.I would watch Milk too,but I felt Sean Penn robbed Mickey Rourke of the Oscar for best actor,so I'm a little hostile towards him right now.I want to watch The Reader as well, but my primary reason for wanting to watch it is because Kate Winslet's nearly nude throughout the movie, lol.
*SPOILER ALERT - IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ THE STORYLINE.GO AWAY NOW*
Ok,so the movie starts with Jamal being one question away from winning 20 Million Rupees on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?"(I personally thought that option thing at the bottom of the screen was really corny). Then it changes into him getting tortured by a policeman. The Indian police have arrested him under the suspicion of cheating. His hands are tied to a rope hanging on the wall, and they repeatedly beat him, berate him, dunk his head into water and even electrocute him to try to force him to confess his crime.Jamal then tells the police captain that every answer of the show was related to his life, and then cut him loose and bring him back to the station to listen to the story, even though the captain is certain that he cheated.
So Jamal starts by telling him about his childhood. He grew up in the slums of Mumbai with his elder brother Salim and their mother.I really felt sad for those children in the slums, not living with proper roofs over their heads, having to make ends meet even as young children, and not getting a decent education.I felt for the kids, and I laughed along as they played truant to play cricket on a private airstrip, and when Jamal jumped into a pile of human faeces just so he could get a signature of his idol Amitabh Bachchan(his elder brother locked Jamal in the public toilet because Jamal was in the loo while another customer also had to go,resulting in the loss of a customer). Then tragedy strikes.Indian Hindus and Indian Muslims are in a religion war,and this conflict spills over into Jamal's village, and he sees his mother being beaten alive. While escaping the Hindus, they meet a young girl by the name of Latika, who has also lost her family. They escape together, even though Salim reacts to Latika with hostility, even shooing her away from a shelter during a heavy storm.Jamal lets her back in though, and the 3 of them became friends, and Jamal calls Latika their "Third Muskerteer".
One day, they were picked up by an orphanage by a man called Maman. He fed them, washed them, and taught them how to sing and dance. At first they thought he was a saint, but they later found out he was exploiting the orphans by making them do labor and becoming street singers.Salim, because of his fiery temper, becomes representative of Maman among the children. One day,Salim witness Maman order a young boy to be knocked out with chloroform and have the boy's eyes blinded so he can earn more money via sympathy.Maman askes Salim to bring Jamal to be "assessed",and Salim reacts with shock, but grudgingly agrees. While walking to Maman, the boys speak in code words and decides to escape the orphanage before they become like that blind boy.Latika by chance follows Jamal to watch his "audition" and escapes along with the boys.Jamal and Salim run on board a train, and Latika was left behind after Salim intentionally lets go of Latika's hand as he was pulling her on board. After a brief fight between the two,the brothers decide to sell souvenirs to the passengers on the train to earn money for food. This is my favourite part of the movie,as they show a montage of the boys' experiences on the train to "Paper Planes" by M.I.A.,ending with them both falling off the train to a desert near the Taj Mahal. The boys then start the lucrative business of being "tour guides" to tourists, while stealing shoes and then reselling them. They then expand into a motley crew of thieves, and as Jamal was giving a tour of a sightseeing location, the group strips a car down for its spare parts. The driver immediately beats up Jamal, thinking he had something to do with it,and the American couple are shocked at the abuse, and offers Jamal money as compensation. While Jamal was nursing his bruised eye,the group was stealing from audience members watching a dance troupe, and Jamal sees Latika as one of the dancers. He then returns to Mumbai with Salim in hopes of finding Latika. They find her in one of the more seedy places in town, thanks to one of the orphans they were friends with, who was blinded by Maman, where she is being trained as a dancer/prostitute.Jamal and Salim try to rescue her,but Maman was notified by one of the women, and so the 3 find themselves trapped.Salim then pulls out a revolver and forces Maman and his cronies on their knees.Salim then kills Maman, and the 3 of them make their way to a hotel, where they break into a room and spend the night there.Salim starts drinking, and feeling jilted by Latika and Jamal's love for each other,he makes his way around town, and to a haunt for one of Maman's associates. As Salim tries to kill the man,he is stopped by a powerful Mumbai gangster. The gangster takes a liking to Salim(The enemy of my enemy is my friend),and takes Salim under his wing.Salim, drunk and filled with confidence, forces Latika to sleep with him as a reward for saving her.Jamal then gets into a fight with Salim, and in a fit of rage,Salim points his gun at Jamal and tells him to leave.Jamal leaves the hotel, and out of Salim and Latika's life.
Years have passed and Jamal is now working at a call centre, serving tea to the workers. While he is covering one of his colleague's shift as he watches "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?",he searches for Latika and Salim's phone numbers. He chances upon Salim's number, and Salim asks Jamal to meet him as he fears their lives might be in danger. As Jamal sees Salim after all these years,he fantasizes about pushing Salim off the unfinished building they're meeting at.Jamal then comes to reality, and satiates himself with a hard punch to Salim.Salim claims that Maman's men are after them, but while he's under the wing of the biggest gangster in Mumbai,Salim is safe.He then wishes for Jamal to move in with him so Jamal could be safe as well.Jamal has a suspicion that Salim knows the whereabouts of Latika, and follows Salim as Salim prepares to whack an enemy of his gang.Jamal then sees Latika in the gangster's compound, and lies his way into the house, where he is reunited with Latika. However,it turns out that Latika is the woman of the gangster, and Jamal could not be with her.He tells her that he would be at the train station everyday waiting for her to arrive, and leaves.Latika does arrive one day,but she is grabbed by a few of the gangster's men, including Salim, and is taken away into hiding from Jamal, but not before watching Latika's cheek get slashed by a knife.
At this point,Jamal reveals his true intentions of joining the show.As it is the most watched show in India,he thought that if he joined, maybe Latika would see him.At the second last question (for 10 million rupees),the host has a heart to heart chat with Jamal in the bathroom during the commercial break.Jamal confesses that he doesn't know the answer to the question, and as the host talks about wealth,he leaves an answer on the fogged up mirrors.Jamal finds an answer written on the mirror, but chooses the other answer(after using a 50:50 lifeline to cut the options by two).Surprisingly, that was the correct answer, and we found out the host planted the wrong answer to make Jamal lose. The host then calls the police to arrest Jamal, and perhaps a hint of jealousy is shown as the host throws a tantrum, calling "Millionaire?" his show.
At this point,Jamal's arrest has become nationwide news, and Latika watches the news report at the gangster's hideout.Salim has a change of heart, and decides to help Latika escape by giving her his car keys and unlocking the door while the gangster was occupied with other women.Salim then decides to kill his boss, and fills up the bathtub with money.Jamal is released and is allowed to finish the 20 million rupee question.Latika rushes to the set of "Millionaire?",only to be caught in a traffic jam.She then abandons the car and watches the show on a nearby TV set.The final question of the show was "Arthos and Porthros were 2 of the 3 Musketeers.Name the 3rd."Jamal gets stuck, and decides to use his last lifeline,to call a friend. The phone starts ringing, but no one answers.Latika realises with shock that Jamal was calling the only phone number he knew,Salim's.Salim had earlier given Latika his phone, telling her not to leave it.Latika therefore rushes back to the car to answer the call.Just as the producers were about to cut the call,Latika answers.Jamal and Latika shares a tender moment on the phone, and Jamal then quizzes Latika about the answer.Alas,Latika doesn't know the answer as well,so Jamal picks a random option, and after a few seconds of suspense, the host proudly announces that Jamal has won the 20 million rupees!60 million viewers cheer on Jamal, who has turned from a slumdog to a millionaire almost overnight.
While this was going on,the gangster accidentally stumbles across the show, and hears the tender phonecall between Latika and Jamal.Immediately suspecting Salim to be behind it,he searches for Salim,to find him locked in a bathroom. The gangster kicks open the door and enters, only for Salim, who was sitting down in the tub full of money,to shoot and kill him.His cronies then come in and kill Salim, who dies in a tub full of money.
Jamal, still reeling from the shock,is at the train station in deep thought, when he sees Latika on the opposite platform. He looks in disbelief, and rushes over to meet her. They declare their love for each other, and this slumdog fairytale is complete.Of course, being an Indian movie, how can it be complete with a...MUSICAL NUMBER!Jamal,Latika and a whole crowd of dancers dance to "Jai Ho!",and as the song ends, the crowd disperses into the trains beside them, leaving Jamal and Latika with each other. The End.
Don't get me wrong,I thought the movie was captivating and it really hits you in the tender parts of your heart, but my realistic side tells me that it's more improbable than Batman. What are the odds that every question is related to your life? Also, the movie left out whole years of Jamal's life, which I was a little unhappy about.I can understand they were trying to cut down costs and cut down the runtime, but Jamal,Salim and Latika deserved to be further developed.I wouldn't mind if it took another hour to fully develop and mature them,it would make it a better movie.I feel the 2 hour runtime wasn't enough to do them more justice, and in the modern times, audiences don't have the patience or attention span to last a 3 hour movie. For this,I'll take half a point off from the movie.I'm going to steal Roger Ebert's signature /4 rating, and give Slumdog Millionaire 3.5/4.It's hard to believe that this movie was almost stuck into the straight-to-DVD hellhole.Guess the movie itself is a fairtale come true.
THE KING IS BACK!
What up,what's haapnin'?I am officially back in business. After 2 days removed of a full month,I am finally posting.
Well,what can I start with...Oh,I got 18 for my 'O' Levels.I know,terrible score.I might get into Poly,but it's on shaky foundations.I'm just thanking my lucky stars,since I slacked during my 'O'.This is pseudo-karma for me.I failed my science,meaning I can't qualify for many courses.All I can say is,I deserve it,and I'll have to pick up from here.Hopefully I'll get into SP,and get into Uni from there.
I got an NS letter yesterday telling me that registration will start when I'm 17 and a half, which is next year. This letter doesn't say much, basically telling me that I have nowhere to run now.Fuck it,I like working out and training my body.Since I have a year extra at Poly before I have to report for NS,this is a great chance for me to work myself into such a fit state that NS will render as a dirt off my shoulder.I'm getting used to the idea of NS.Even got myself a crew cut 2 days ago.LOL.
YAY,CNY is just around the corner, and ya'll know "No one on the corner got swagga' like moi".I love Chinese New Year. The food, the games, the TV specials, the annual Jack Neo movie(well, not this year),the gambling, the food, the hong bao.LOL,god I love this time of year.Makes me feel like a kid again.I bought my CNY clothes, which is awesome, and I'm really proud to announce that I now own my very first pair of Converse Chuck Taylor's!Finally I'm aboard the train to nowhere!
Well, what can I say about my extended vacation?Gym is now a habit for me.I feel funny if I don't go.My goal is to shed the fatty mass and get a 6 pack before Poly starts,if I can get into Poly :).I want to make all the girls go "Wow",and all the guys go limp with intimidation at my sheer perfection.
I'm going out more, providing I can afford going out.Life is a lot nicer when you're not holed up at home everyday.
Well,I guess this is it for my return.Just want to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year!
